The year was 2022. I found a black lace poncho at a local flea market — complete with trailing tassels — and felt oddly compelled by it. Why, I wondered, was a poncho calling my name when the last time I’d worn one was in 2004?
I should have known then that a future trend was woven into every stitch of that delicate crochet: ponchos were making their way back into the zeitgeist. It might have taken three or four years, but now they are everywhere once again. They're being heralded by counter-culture cool girls and mainstream fashion publications alike as THE essential garment of summer ’26.
So, how does one pull off the poncho? Whether you're in the mood for knit or chiffon, where there is a will, there is a way. There is nothing quite as Practical Magic-witchy as crochet, as Something's Gotta Give "Hamptons mom" as cashmere, or as Dua Lipa-in-St-Tropez as silk. Whether you go completely sheer or bundle up, the only things you really need are a head hole and a dream.
Below, we've rounded up the most exciting ponchos of the season to get you in the spirit.
THE PARTY GIRL PONCHO

Give 'em the old razzle dazzle with a top-poncho hybrid that does not necessarily call for anything underneath. This Jaded London cropped cape wears well with a casual bottom, and is perfect for a night clubbing.

THE ASYMMETRIC ACCESSORY

Oh Polly is nothing if not right on time to a trend, and their Vienna cape proves it. This sheer design features an asymmetric design that exposes a little more skin than other styles, with a little floral detail for fun. Obviously it's intended to wear with this corset set, but pair with a simple singlet and jeans and you've immediately elevated an everyday outfit.

THE FULL SET

In poncho, we trust. Buci, a NYC independent designer, was among the first to introduce a line of silk ponchos into its collection, and perhaps the only label to sell the layer as part of a set. This is their second iteration of a three-piece poncho moment, featuring a versatile mini, their essential bra top and veil-like cape with an angelic lace trim.

THE GOWN-CAPE CROSSOVER

'Pull up in something casual' — they said. Live for the drama in a poncho top with a high-low, floor-skimming hem. NAKED WARDROBE always knows how to make a statement, and this lime green number is no exception.
SHOP: NAKED WARDROBE, Chiffon Cape Top $108
THE WEDDING-READY WRAP

Feeling like your simple slip dress is a little 'unfinished'? Got you. While this dress-cape is an all-in-one — which means, unfortunately, you can't just strip her off when the dance floor heats up — it's sure to impress any mother in sight. Also, need we say, a great bridesmaid option?
SHOP: Satin High Neck Cape Dress, $49.90
THE LIGHTWEIGHT LAYER

While we're being inundated with sheer silk galore, the original poncho was a light knit cape for abject coziness without the restrictiveness of a sweater. This throw-on cashmere option lets you go arms-free while conserving your torso temp — it also looks great with everything from streamlined trousers to a flirty mini skirt.
SHOP: Alden Cashmere Poncho, $178
THE COVER-UP CAPE

Denim shorts? Forget it. Breezy cotton dress? Seeya. The new all-purpose cover-up has arrived in the poncho, and it will take you from the beach to the bar, or maybe even an elevated lunch. All you need under this number is a bikini or a pair of booty shorts and bra for a Dua Lipa-style vacation look of your dreams.
